The 25th of February 2025 in Bologna, it has been held the 2025 Annual Festival, organized by Osservatorio Artico and sponsored by the Municipality of Bologna and the Marina Militare, about the Arctic Region and the role of Science, Policy and Defense, Business R&I and Diplomacy within its environmental, social, and economic development framework.
The invited authorities, institutions, research institutes and industries uniformely agreed the Arctic Sea and Region is one of the most impacted region by climate change and at the same time by the current geopolitical and commercial interests. Especially the cooperation for the seabed mapping in the last eight years at sea between the Hydrographic Institute of Marina Militare, and the Italian Research Institute, CNR, has produced data that are shared with Norwegian authorities responsible for Nautical charts publications. This cooperation is promoting dialogue and awareness as aligned to the European open data principles.
The integration of science with diplomacy can bring facts and coherence in the negotiation and representation of the will of local people and places and provide tools to build social preparedness to future unknown changes.
For industries, among their challenges into corporate strategy, the studies and science cooperation on the Arctic can serve planning and strategic budget allocation and initiatives to increase the resilience to future uncertainties, as well as to integrate sustainability in social and environmental practices that can bring added value and early adoption advantages.
The event has been very inspiring and allowed several perspectives on what is today a very pristine nature-paced society who faces global and fast-peacened environmental and geopolitical challenges and opportunities.
